After 50 years writing, directing, producing and teaching theatre, I’m enjoying being on the road, alone, with just a small backpack, and my first show, The Godmother & Other Legends. Part memoir, part social history, this deals with my early childhood in a secret society in 1950s and 60s England. Drilling into the source material I began to understand those formative years in a new light, which greatly increased my appreciation of the people who raised me, and the lengths to which they went to ensure I turned into me, and not someone else.
The aim of the project was always to leave an archive of family stories, memories and reflection for my children and grandchildren. After touring the show in 2024, to Finland, Norway, England, Scotland and Wales, I realized I had far more material than could possibly be included in a single program. The answer I decided, was to work towards a trilogy.
The second episode A Father Lost & Found is the story of my father’s post-separation pilgrimage to America, as recorded in his diaries and letters. That show will premiere towards the end of 2025.
A third episode, as yet untitled, celebrating the outrageous fortunes of my grandparents, will follow in 2026, with the possibility of the entire trilogy made available thereafter.
The Frog Company consists of myself, researcher and storyteller Julian Garner, editor Karin Berglund, and producer Sebastian Hornborg.
Our name, however, derives from that adopted by a group of school friends which, in 1974, made up the cast and crew of my first play, Lifegame. We were mostly Londoners, and we aspired to become a touring theatre, so as the cockney rhyming slang for the word road is frog & toad (generally shortened to frog), The Frog Company seemed as good a name as any. Fifty years later, at a recent reunion with members of that original group, it was suggested that it would also be a good fit for this latest venture: a touring show about the game of life.
And so it was decided.
